Slavery in South America during the 18th century changed the demographic of Brazil creating a multifaceted society. Capoeira was created and formed by African slaves as a means of escape and
freedom.
Capoeiristas, perform and teach others the dance in order to fight a multitude of social and racial stigmas.
Marginalized Afro-Brazilians find it difficult to achieve a higher status and respect as an individual and as a group. Globalization has allowed for Capoeira to be a legal practice and a way to
express the cultural background of its participants.
